As we got older and more financially secure, we started to want to spruce up the place, especially as our kids got ready to leave for college. I would love to talk about remodeling the bathroom and deck, because they ended up being changed the most significantly, as well as being the most aesthetically pleasing. The bathroom was a great deal of fun, because we took what was originally a small, drab and functional little unit and went wild with it. We thought outside of the box big time, looking at websites, catalogs, and other people's homes. We replaced our showerhead with a high-pressure unit and the shower curtains with lovely glass. We replaced the boring old fixtures with brass neo-modern ones. It actually ended up being very romantic. It was frustrating at the time only because we had to use the kid's bathroom upstairs for a few months, but the process of watching the bathroom come together, ended up being deeply rewarding. The really exciting part was the deck. In Portland, it is rainy most of the year. Even in the summer it is still very humid. Long story short, our deck was almost rotten through in some parts. We replaced our old deck with a bigger, brighter version with higher quality wood and stain. We put up a new, higher railing. We have an amazing view of downtown Portland at night, so it felt really satisfying to make our deck a place to spend time. All in all, remodeling was a fantastic experience. It turned out to increase the value of our home, as well as our own personal satisfaction. It sounds cheesy, but it was one of those things that helped make our house a home. We have no regrets, and would do it again in a second! This is what we are planning for our next remodel. http://johnbranch24.blinkweb.com
